2025 Mexican Fishing

Take Limits

The Mexican Take Limits Are A Points Based System

Mexico uses a point based system for catch / take limits, with different species having different points.  You are allowed 10 points per day per fisherman.  You cannot catch more than 5 points of the same species per day. Any type of Billfish (Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish) are 5 points each.

Mexican law prohibits the taking of abalone, lobster, shrim, pismo clams, cabrilla, totuava, oysters, and sea turtles.

Bag & Possession Limits

Each fisherman is permitted to catch up to ten (10) fish per day, with no more than five (5) fish of any one species. In addition, anglers are subject to the following limits: No more than one (1) billfish. No more than two (2) tarpon, dorado or roosterfish. Fish that are in the one fish or two fish categories count as five fish of the total ten fish daily bag limit. The maximum daily bag limit for underwater marine or freshwater fishing is five (5) fish. In fresh waters, anglers are permitted to take up to five (5) fish per day.

Shark and Giant Seabass These fish are also 5 points each. Like billfish, only one of these may be taken per day. You can bag one shark and one giant seabass, but not more than one each.

Other Species. All other species are 1 point each. These include, but are not limited to, Tuna, Cabrilla, Wahoo, Yellowtail, Grouper, Rock Fish, Trigger Fish etc. But remember, you are limited to no more than 5 fish from any one species.

Fin Fish Rules

Marlins, Sailfish, Swordfish, and Sharks: Only one specimen per boat, per day is allowed, which counts as the equivalent of five other species.

Roosterfish, Dorado (Mahi-Mahi), and Tarpon: Fishermen may catch two specimens per day, which also count as five of any other species.

Underwater Fishing Limits

Underwater fishing is limited to five fish per day, using rubber band or spring type harpoons, and only while skindiving.
