That first Bottom Fishing Tournament was such a hit that it quickly became an annual tradition – and not just for SWYC. The tournament became an Invitational event open to Anglers from clubs all over San Diego\, who brought their families\, their competitive spirit\, and plenty of fish stories.  Over the decades\, the tournament has transformed from a fun off‑season get‑together into one of SWYC’s most beloved signature charity events.  The tournament supports various charities but has become closely associated with Captain Rollo’s Kids at Sea. \nAnd that’s where Captain Rollo comes in. \nThe Heart Behind the Cause – Captain Rollo \nJames “Rollo” Heyn wasn’t just a legendary long‑range captain of the Royal Polaris – he was the kind of guy who made everyone feel welcome on the water. He loved teaching kids to fish\, to respect the ocean\, and to experience the magic of being out at sea. \nAfter he passed\, his friends and fellow anglers created Captain Rollo’s Kids at Sea to keep that spirit alive. Since 1999\, this incredible mostly volunteer‑run nonprofit introduces children from all backgrounds to the magic of the ocean. From San Diego to San Francisco\, they’ve taken over 150\,000 kids on half‑day fishing trips\, opening doors to marine education\, environmental stewardship\, and even future careers on the water.  \nFor many of the kids\, it’s their first time on a boat – and it opens their eyes to a world they might never have seen and sparks a lifelong connection to the ocean.  That’s why this tournament matters.  Every entry\, every raffle ticket\, every auction item and/or experience donated\, every bit of support helps keep those trips for the kids going.  Supporting this tournament means supporting those life‑changing moments. \nJOIN US – APRIL 18\, 2026 \nWhat began as a small winter fishing challenge is now a full day of fun\, community\, and giving back.
